Local Currency and Payment Advice

In Monterrey, Nuevo León, the official currency is the Mexican peso (MXN). While some tourist areas may accept U.S. dollars, it’s advisable to use pesos for most transactions to ensure favorable exchange rates and wider acceptance.

  • Credit Card Acceptance: Credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are widely accepted in Monterrey’s urban areas, including hotels, restaurants, and retail stores. However, smaller businesses, local markets, and transportation services may prefer cash payments. It’s advisable to carry some cash for such situations.
  • Currency Exchange Rates: Exchange rates fluctuate regularly. A good point of reference is 20 MXN = 1 USD. Be cautious of dynamic currency conversion at ATMs, where you’re offered the choice to be charged in your home currency; this can result in unfavorable rates. Always opt to be charged in Mexican pesos to avoid additional fees.
If you need to exchange foreign currency, locate the currency exchange house at the airport (mostly on the boarding level) as well as at your hotel.
  • ATM Locations: ATMs are generally located on the lower levels of Terminals A and C. Be aware that ATM withdrawal limits in Mexico typically range from 4,000 to 11,000 pesos per transaction, depending on the bank and location.

Weather and Clothing Recommendations for Monterrey in April

Monterrey enjoys warm to hot weather in April, with average high temperatures around 30°C (86°F) and lows around 17°C (63°F). The climate is generally dry and sunny, with minimal chances of rain.

To ensure a comfortable trip, we recommend packing:

  • Light, breathable clothing such as cotton or linen
  • Short-sleeved shirts, blouses, and dresses for daytime activities
  • A light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings or air-conditioned spaces
  • Comfortable walking shoes for exploring the city
  • Sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen to protect against strong sun
  • A refillable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day (You will find spots in the campus to refill your bottle)

Prepare for warm days, cool nights, and plenty of sunshine!
